PTR elephant died due to 'heat stroke & congestive heart failure'

PNS

May 5 by a veterinary officer Chandon Dey, said field director PTR, M P Singh. However, the finding is not yet confirmatory one as viscera is for forensic examination but not for chemical examination report of which will take weeks to come here.

The post mortem report (A copy of it is with the Pioneer) goes on to read that the calf had severe pulmonary congestion. It had right sided cardiac dilation. It had also sub endocardial hemorrhage in the left ventricle. Its nasal cavities had mucosa, larynx and trachea had frothy exudates and liver was congested while the spleen was enlarged.

The findings on the stomach, small intestines and large intestines were silent on presence of water in the body of the calf. The report reads that the stomach of this calf had multiple small erosions and haemorrhages in the epithelium of the stomach.

On the intestines both the small and the large the post mortem report read it was filled with gases. Some haemorragic signs were found in the intestines. Sources said the post mortem report read about ‘gases’ in small and large intestines but conspicuously silent on its water content if any there.

However, sources said right from May 6 when a senior deputy director North division of PTR A K Mishra had said most unambiguously that the calf died due to dehydration as its intestines had no water, its skin was too parched, its skin was folded and had wrinkled like anything which all went for absence of water in the body then this post mortem report ought to have focused more on the water issue in the body.

Sources said the officer Mishra is known for his making candid comments and remarks and stands by what he says as he has told the Pioneer this Tuesday May 8 that in the larger interest of wild life a true ground reality is always preferable to a glossy one on wildlife.

Mishra again said that his version of dehydration of this calf resulting in its death be taken in right earnest as there were tell tale signs of dehydration on its body.

The post mortem report did speak of urinary bladder ‘filled with urine’ but this filling of the bladder was due to the retention of urine in the bladder read the post mortem report.

Sources said field director PTR M P Singh is scheduled to hold a press conference in Betla on May 9 where he is expected to give details on the surface water management in PTR for wild life.
