Police initiative to rescue road mishap victims

It is more than seven years since the proposal for the opening of trauma centres alongside National Highway 33 from Ranchi to Jamshedpur was sanctioned. But the plan has not yet taken off. In 2004, the Rotary Club had also announced to set up trauma care centres on the Tata-Ranchi stretch of NH 33, but that too remained on paper.

Now help is at hand as the district police in collaboration with Tata Steel and the local hospitals has decided to launch a system in which mishap victims will be provided medical relief.

Taking an important step in this direction, Senior Superintendent of Police, Amol V Homkar on Thursday held a meeting with representatives of all the local hospitals and Tata Steel to prepare the modalities for launching the system for providing immediate relief to mishap victims. A representative of East India Health Foundation, an NGO working in this field, also attended the meeting to provide its expertise.

The SP said that the idea behind launching the system was to provide immediate relief to the injured in any road mishap or any other incident so that precious life could be saved by rushing the victim to the nearest hospital.

According to information, the district police will provide six ambulances with drivers whereas the Tata Steel will provide medical staff who will rescue the injured from scene of mishap and rush them to the nearest hospital.

He said that the medical group which runs Kantilal Memorial Hospital in Bistupur has taken special interest in starting the system for providing quick relief.  Other hospitals which have also joined the district police’s initiative are Tata Main Hospital, Tata Motors Hospital and Bramhanand Narayana Multi-Speciality Hospital.

“It is an ambitious project and we are confident that it will serve the purpose to rescue injured people. The unit would be functioning round-the-clock and will have trained paramedics in a state-of-the-art ambulance,” said an official of a local hospital.

As of now there is no facility of a rescue centre either on the NH-33 stretch between Ranchi and Jamshedpur or in the city. After any mishap, the injured are taken to nearby MGM Hospital in Sakchi or RIMS in Ranchi that too before any medical aid.

A city-based trauma care specialist, talking about the importance of the golden hour, said, “If accident victims receive proper medical attention and are transported to hospital within an hour of the mishap, chances of survival increase.”
