The police arrested Sujit Maharaj, the monk of Sonari-based Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS) on Friday morning in the minor rape case. He was subsequently sent to Ghaghidih Central Jail after he was produced before a judicial magistrate.
Sonari police station OC, Naresh Prasad Sinha confirmed that they have arrested the monk and sent him to jail this morning.
"We have arrested the monk on charges of raping a 15-year-old girl on Tuesday evening. In this connection, the victim had lodged an FIR with the Sonari police station, after which we had roped in the CWC which interrogated the victim and sent her to the Sadar Hospital, Khasmahal for a medical examination on Thursday," said Sinha.
On the basis of statement made by the victim before the police and also before Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the police arrested the monk but there are contradictions at certain points between the girl's statement and the CCTV footage obtained by the police.
