Online shopping no dampener for traditional markets

Despite attractive offers given by the online shopping sites during this Dipawali, traditional market in Ranchi continues to dominate as people still prefer to visit the shops of their choice with their families for purchasing household goods. Dipawali market this year too remained flooded with the families purchasing kitchenware and electronic household item till Wednesday.

“Although attractive offers made by by some of the popular online shopping sites on the internet, people are still coming to our shops and making purchases,” said the owner of the electronic goods showroom of a reputed company at Harmu Road Deepak Sharma.

According to Sharma, online purchasing can never match the popularity of personal shopping as you get variety of choices available before you out of which you can choose the best one after comparing to the products of different companies, he said.

“In online shopping however, you can only see the photograph of the product made available to you by the seller along with some vague promises made by him which could never be claimed once you have purchased the article in case they are not fulfilled by the company,” he added. Besides that, you cannot get the guarantee of after sale service of the goods, if purchased online, he added.

“It is a common mindset of our society that unless you do not see the product with your eyes, you do not trust on the seller; Besides that people still prefer the age old culture of going on shopping at festive occasions with the family which cannot be done in case of online shopping,” said Sharma. People here enjoy shopping as it is considered as an adventure, he added.

In case of kitchen appliances also, despite quoting lesser prices by the online sites people still rely on personal shopping.

“Prices quoted by the online shopping is just an eyewash as prices quoted by them  are of  mostly of cheap brands while the branded items are sold on their maximum retail prices by them,” said a retailer of kitchen appliances in Kadru.

Kitchen appliances are generally purchased by women who are in a habit of negotiation before purchasing anything which also force them to go for personal shopping, added the retailer.

Traditional culture of shopping of household products during Dipawali seem to have remained undeterred against the much tempting and attractive offers made by online shopping sites, he said.
