Older people match zeal of youth in FJCCI election

life members of the FJCCI, some of them old enough to walk alone, matched the zeal of youth when it came to elect new members for the trade body. While the younger voters flocked the place before the voting could start, older people started pouring in around afternoon.

For octogenarian Balbir Singh the moment was as special as it was when he was active in the Chamber. As someone who observed elections from a very long time, Singh outlined the shift in voting behaviour of voters.

“Voting pattern has changed drastically in last few decades. Voting earlier was based on proximity of an electorate which is no longer a case now,” said Singh.

Singh added, earlier people had to approach president for any work. However, president these days delegate their powers making it convenient for the members to find a solution to their grievances.

Interestingly, DC Bajaj, former president of FJCCI differed from Singh and ruled out any change in voting behaviour exhibited by voters during the chamber elections.

“Business connections still influences voting behaviour in elections. I can quote names of people who would be elected because of their associations with a lot of businessmen. There are only seven candidates who are contesting on their merit,” said Bajaj.
