The Centre for Study and Research in Intellectual Property Rights (CSRIPR) of National University of Study in Research and law (NUSRl) would host a seminar on ‘Future impact of Novartis Verdict on Pharmaceutical Sector in India’, today.
Explaining about the theme, NUSRl Research Scholar Pinaki Baruah told The Pioneer, “Developing countries are left ‘to live in lurch’ and civil society organizations rail against drug companies for charging exorbitant prices for treatments with patent-protected drugs to fight diseases such as AIDS wherein India stands as second largest country of AIDS patients in the world.”
It is noteworthy that in the present scenario Multinational Companies are more concerned in claiming patent rights in traditional knowledge, plants, animals, genes and gene fragments. This behaviour and practice of Multinational Giants raises the various moral and ethical issues.
“Studying the impacts of science, technology and society and vice versa is an essential exercise need to be done regularly, then only the balance can be maintained between nature and technology,” added Baruah.
