The authorities of IIT-ISM have decided to observe non motorised vehicle day twice a month within campus to check the carbon emissions to reduce pollution within campus.
Institute director Rajiv Shekhar has signed an order to this effect when all staff members, teachers as well as students would have to leave use of motorised vehicles while moving around campus.
Giving details S Pandayan assistant professor of Environmental engineering department said, for now the second and fourth Tuesday of every month would be observed as no motorised vehicle day in campus. It would be applicable on all including outside visitors.
The move would help in reducing the carbon emission within campus and with it we also would be monitoring the impact on air pollution within campus . If results were encouraging the days may be increased, said Pandyan.
He said that the main concern is the high presence of PM 2.5 and PM 10 in the air of Dhanbad that has put the city in an attainable city category as both happen to be too
high in air compared to normal average.
Pandyan claimed that the presence of both is 200 to 230 microgram per cubic meter of air . Emissions from vehicles are floating in air that make air quality more dangerous, he added.
It’s worth mentioning that IIT-ISM has around 7500 students and around 1000 teachers and staff. Majority of the staff use motorised vehicles for moving around campus . The two day ban may help improve the quality of air on campus.
Pandyan said if results were encouraging we also would request people of the city to adopt no motorised vehicle day in the city to clean air.
