BJP leader Saryu Roy, who is also the patron of Yugantar Bharti — a NGO set up for the cause of environmental issues — visited Jubilee lake on Friday. Talking to The Pioneer, the former Jamshedpur West MlA Saryu Roy said, “The condition of the lake is a matter of concern. I inspected the lake for ascertain exact reason for death of the fishes but what came out during the inspection proves that the existence of the lake is virtually under threat.” He said that immediate steps should be taken to control the menace. He went on to add that the lake is a part of the city and environmental conditions of the city also depend on it. He informed that the sampling of the water from the lake would be carried out on Saturday and sent to Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB), accredited laboratory of Yugantar Bharti at Sidroul (near Namkum) in Ranchi for analysis. “We are hopeful to get the analysis report of the water samples within a few days and after studying it, I will file an ‘intervention petition’ into the Jharkhand High Court’s suo motu public interest litigation over death before May 15,” added Roy.

KK Sharma, who is also HoD of zoology in Jamshedpur Cooperative College and Ornithological Society of India (Bihar-Jharkhand) member, said that the shallowness of the lake has reached an all time low due to silt deposition.

The turbidity of water in the lake is quite high as it was not transparent due to influence of domestic and industrial sewage coming to the lake from the four inlets.
