A ‘Thalassemia Pump Library’ at the ‘Thalassemia Day Care’ was inaugurated at the Sadar Hospital in Ranchi on Wednesday by Health Secretary Nitin Madan Kulkarni. The project worth Rs. 11 lakh has been funded by CSR of IRCTC Indian Railways and aims to benefit more than 350 Thalassemia patients residing in the Ranchi and nearby districts.
General Manager IRCTC Tarun Kumar, Ranchi Civil Surgeon Dr VB Prasad and Atul Gera Secretary Jharkhand Thalassemia Foundation were present with other doctors from the hospital at the occasion.
‘Thalassemia Pump Library’ is an initiative of The Wishing Factory aiming to provide medical equipments to Thalassemia major patients in Ranchi. The wellness centre will be equipped with 4000 Desferal vials, 2000 scalp vein set, 8 Iron chelation pumps and 200 Leucocyte blood filters.
“Sadar Hospital Ranchi has adequate facilities for treating blood disorders like Thalassemia. The hospital provides medicines as well as blood transfusion free of cost for such patients. The new facilities that have been introduced include infusion pumps, intravenous iron chelation agent drugs and Leucocyte filters which will prove very beneficial for the patients,” said the civil surgeon.
The pump library has been established to educate the patients about the importance of iron chelation. It will also provide them with pumps- a medical device used for iron chelation so that affordability of pumps does not keep the patients from getting proper treatment. A drug- Desferal which is used for iron chelation and blood filters for safe blood transfusion to enhance the life span of the children will also be provided.
“This initiative will enhance the quality of life of the children in a great way. The centre was started with six beds and is now equipped with 18 beds in just a year’s time with children coming from nine districts. We strive to improve the quality of life of these children,” said Gera.
The Wishing Factory has previously established similar centers in Mumbai, Pune, Vadodara, Jaipur, Warangal and other cities.
