Motivate villagers to use toilet, says DC

RR Srivastava

DC Ravi Shankar Shukla has directed the block officials to motivate the villagers to use toilets so that their area can be declared open defecation free and it is also beneficial for their own and others health. Shukla gave this direction after getting the reports of the teams constituted to inspect the ground level situation of the ongoing toilet construction drive in the villages under Swachchh and Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan.

Some days ago Deputy Commissioner, Hazaribagh has constituted teams under the leadership of block development officers to give a report on this ongoing drive. The teams for Keredari block inspected ten toilets randomly and found that out of ten six are in use and the house owners are not using four though it is complete.

Similar reports came from almost all the blocks which have really posed a challenge before the district administration. As per reports the villagers are coming forward for toilet construction in their houses but are not interested in using it. They are still following the old tradition of open defecation. To meet this challenge the district administration has directed the block officials to start a motivation drive.

Except Daru block from every block reports are clearly saying that 20-40 per cent house owners of every block who had taken benefit of toilet construction scheme are not using it. The report of Daru block is the exception where the visiting team found all ten out of ten toilets in use.

The inspection teams led by BDOs found that in Chauparan block out of 17 completed toilets 14 were in use, in Katkamsandi out of 13 three were not in use, in Chalkusa out of 25 only 20 were in use, in Barkatha and Barhi out of 10 toilets 3 and 2 toilets were still waiting to be used.
