Monsoons happy hours for Birsa zoo inmates

Wild animals at Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park at Ormanjhi are cheering with a ‘fit’ and ‘fine’ mood since the monsoon season rarely troubles them with any disease.

Infact, this healthy ambience noticed only during this time of the year allows the zoo officials to relax.

Explaining the reason in details, the Veterinary specialist here Dr Ajay Kumar conceded, “Water borne diseases are usually prevalent in natural habitats and not in the captivity like our zoo wherein all the sanitation precautions are taken in the sense that both food and water are managed in conserved manner.”

He further adds that “the water for semi-aquatic mammals and amphibian reptiles is filtered giving less chance for water borne diseases.” Adding to this happiness the animals which were suffering with summer prone diseases are now cured because of the pleasant shower climate.

According to Dr Ajay the bacteria and virus growth among the wild animals increases during raining seasons further affecting their immunity. To strengthen the immunity of the animals in such cases, Immuno-modulator drugs are being prescribed and given to all the herbivores and carnivores by mixing it in the food. He said, “High range broad spectrum antibiotics diluted in the drinking water is served to the inmates everyday.”

“Birds are mainly vulnerable in rainy season so we spread herbal anti-viral and disinfectants around their enclosure during the onset of the rainy season,” added Dr Kumar.

The zoo officials claim that they have not come across any monsoon diseases among any breed of the animals here in past one year. Taking a sign of relief Zoo Director AK Patra said, “We have to plan out some special arrangements in summer and winter but for monsoon we do not have to think much.”
