HEC Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) Avijit Ghosh has urged all the stakeholders in mining industry to consider sustainability more a social responsibility than merely need of the hour.
Speaking in the inaugural session of a two-day 28th National Convention of Mining Engineers and National Seminar on Challenges for Sustainable Development of Mining Industry to Meet Energy Security, Ghosh added that sustainable management of resources remained a vital issue for the mining industry.
The convention and seminar by Ranchi Chapter of the Institution of Engineers (IEI) in association with Ranchi Chapter of Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute (MGMI) of India and Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) was organised at Mayuri Audotorium in CMPDI to discuss challenges for mining industry ahead.
Apart from Ghosh, CMPDI Director (Technical/P&D) Binay Dayal, IEI Chairman Sanjay Sen and Honorary Secretary MR Kumar and hundreds of engineers from mining industry and others were present on the occasion to become a part of one of the most important energy issues of the time.
“Sustainable resources management is a vital issue that needs to be addressed by the mining industry. Sustainability is not only need of our community but also the responsibility of all the stake holders. The increasing demand for energy requires adoption of advance mining technologies to withstand the challenges of sustainable development viz reducing carbon footprint,” Ghosh said.
Stressing upon the theme of seminar in detail, Dayal said that this very timely seminar would provide a platform for interaction amongst the participants and would help the mineral, mining and allied industries for sustained growth in future. ”The seminar will certainly serve its purpose in improving the present scenario of mining industry vis-a-vis energy security in India,” Dayal added.
Experts in the seminar opined that coal fired power industries were destined to loose their share in power generation for obvious reasons. But many of them also believed that the industry as a power generator was going to remain in demand due to availability of coal in states like Jharkhand. Sen expressed the need of adoption of advance mining technologies to withstand the challenges of sustainable development of mining industry in India in the future.
