MGM rape case rocks Assembly, Govt forms probe committee

PNS

The Jamshedpur gang rape incident rocked the Assembly on Friday with the Opposition alleging that the law and order situation in the State had deteriorated under the JMM-Congress Government. As per reports, a 50 year old woman patient was allegedly gang raped in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital, Jamshedpur. The matter came to light when the Sakchi police produced the victim in court for registering her statement under section 164 of IPC. The police have even carried out the medical test of the victim but the report is yet to come.

The woman in her statement before police had said that on March 6 she was admitted at ward number 64 of MGM when a youth under the influence of alcohol assaulted and raped her. As the incident has occurred at State health minister Banna Gupta’s constituency, the incident has given a tool in the hand of Opposition BJP to attack BJP over poor law and order situation.

BJP legislator from Rajmahal Anant Ojha raising the issue demanded work adjournment on the issue. Ojha said, “It is very shameful incident that a woman who is admitted at prestigious hospital is raped. The incident becomes more shocking as it has occurred at the home constituency of health minister Banna Gupta.”

The Health Minister intervening on the issue said that City SP is investigating the case. He said, “Strict action will be taken against those found behind the incident.” However, the BJP legislators dissatisfied with Minister’s remark entered the well of the House staging protest over the incident. The BJP lawmakers demanded constitution of probe committee in the incident. Later parliamentary affairs minister Alamgir Alam said, “The government has constituted a committee to probe the incident.” Later on Speaker intervention the matter was sorted out.

Like Thursday the House resumed with Speaker carrying out question hour, zero hour and other proceedings of house. CPI (ML) MLA from Bagodar Vinod Kumar Singh raised the issue of power cuts at DVC command area. He said that there are severe power cuts in State especially in the districts such as Hazaribagh, Bokaro, Giridih, Koderma and others which fall under the command area of Damodar valley Corporation (DVC).

BJP legislator Amar Bauri said that police is treating Baghmara MLA Dhullu Mahto as terrorist. The government should consider that he is people’s representative. Bauri said, “Police are after  Dhullu Mahto as if he is murder accused or involved in terrorist activities.” Due to police action, Dhullu Mahto is unable to attend House proceedings. The BJP lawmaker demanded Speaker’s protection to Mahto in this case.  On Dhullu Mahto case even State BJP president Deepak Prakash had said that police is treating Mahto as criminal and terrorist.  The Baghmara MLA who is absconding is facing charges of land-grabbing, molestation and extortion.

Mahto is a two-time legislator, and he managed to retain his Baghmara seat despite an anti-incumbency wave in Jharkhand during the 2019 Assembly polls.
