Infuriated villagers on Tuesday lynched a 20-year-old man in a Palamu village for reportedly inquiring about an eve-teasing case.

Wakil Khan, a resident of Kudwa Bhadipur village under Haidernagar Police Station, was beaten with iron rods and wooden batons in neighbouring Khadiha village on Tuesday morning after he inquired about three villagers, who had allegedly harassed two minor girls.

Sources said that the girls, both residents of Khadiha village, were harassed while they were on their way to tuition on Tuesday morning.

The girls reportedly informed Wakil and his friend Danish Khan about the incident and sought help. Later, Wakil and Danish raised their concern over the issue to residents of Khadiha village but the conversation soon turned into an altercation.

This led to a brawl and the two friends were outnumbered. Wakil died of the beating at the spot while Danish was rushed to the hospital after other villagers intervened.

Hussainabad Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Vijay Kumar said that the Wakil’s body has been sent for autopsy, while the police have nabbed one Deepak Kumar in connection with the case.

“Other villagers involved in the attack will be arrested soon,” he said.

Jharkhand has gained infamy for lynching incidents in the past. Over 12 such incidents were reported in the state in 2017.
