Traffic remained disrupted for over eight hours on Dimna lake Road connecting city with Patamda-Bodam block when the local residents led a massive road blockade demanding compensation for Thumpu Murmu, who was killed by a dumper on Thursday morning near Haludboni, some 15 km from the city.
The 47-year-old Thumpu Murmu, son of late Tara Murmu, a resident of Bhadodih in Bodam block and a labourer by profession was hit by a dumper coming from behind.
The local people then blocked the Dimna lake Road connecting city with Patamda-Bodam and Bandgaon area of Bengal by placing trees on the road. It was only after the intervention of Bodam BDO, Sunil Kumar Prajapati that the owner of the vehicle, Ujjwal Kumar Singh, a native of Chaibasa finally agreed to pay to the deceased family a cash amount of Rs 2 lakh and written assurance to pay further Rs 50,000 to the family members.
Bodam police station officer-in-charge, Birender Toppo said that the case under negligence driving leading to death would be lodged against the absconding driver of the heavy commercial vehicle at the police station.
The entire stretch of Dimna is turning accident-prone zone. On an average two fatal mishaps take place every month on the Dimna Road alone, and more than 14 persons sustain injuries. As the Dimna Road is the only link for the heavy vehicles to the NH No 33, the Dimna Road is getting increasingly accident-prone.
