A 40-year-old autorickshaw driver was on Tuesday arrested for killing his wife and a six-year-old daughter at Chandil, in Seraikela-Kharsawan district.
Bijay Kumar Mondal had tried to burn his wife’s body in a jungle and dumped his daughter’s corpse in a jungle near Patamda. However, a SIM card recovered from the woman’s half-burnt body served as a clue and resulted in the killer’s arrest.
Chandil Police Station Inspector Om Prakash Singh said Mondal, who used to stay at a rented house at Baridih locality, had married a Munger girl eight years ago. They had two daughters.
According to the police, the family boarded a train from Munger to Jamshedpur on March 21, but got down at Chandil station. Here, Mondal offered his wife and elder daughter snacks and hired an autorickshaw for Jamshedpur. On the way, both fell unconscious. The autorickshaw driver ferrying them grew suspicious and abandoned them midway.
The SIM card was found during post-mortem at MGM Medical College Hospital on March 23.
“We tried to get the body identified through call details and eventually, we reached Mondal,” said the Inspector.
According to police, Mondal has a second wife in Jamshedpur and the police are trying to find out whether she was also involved.
Bodam Police confirmed recovery of the six-year-old girl’s body from a jungle on March 23.
