The City Police will no longer be silent spectators to young lovers having fun at public places and parks unmindful of the people around. The policemen in plain clothes, with baton and torch will move around in the parks to guard the girls. In addition to this, police patrolling will be increased at weekends at the park areas.
“We have been receiving regular complaints. Eve-teasing cases have witnessed an increase at the picnic spots so much so that the district women cell of the police has planned to work in coordination with the respective local police stations to prevent incidents of eve-teasing in the picnic spots,” said an official of the district women’s cell.
Taking a firm step following complaints of vulgarity and obscene acts by lovebirds at the Jubilee Park led a team of Mahila Thana nabbed couples in the park under Bistupur police station area. During the raid which continued for one hour on Tuesdy, in all three couples were nabbed by the raiding team which include the officer-in-charge of Mahila Thana, Priyanka Anand, four lady constables and as many male constables.
The girls who were in the police net were in their teens, one of them just 14-year-old, and the men were aged between 22 to 27 years. Priyanka Anand said that the raiding team focussed only on those couples who were creating obscenity openly, much to the displeasure and embarrassment of the people visiting the park for spending some quality time. There are also reports of anti-social elements capturing the lovers in their mobile cameras and blackmailing them later on. “We are taking action against those who were creating a vulgar scene,” said the officer-in-charge of the Mahila Thana.
She said as today being the maiden day of such a drive, they called in the parents of both the girls and the men at the police station, where those in custody will be placed before the parents for getting the latter to know exactly what their wards are doing. “We have decided to continue with the drive and from the next time we may prosecute those who will be nabbed while creating obscenity in the park, which is a public place,” the lady officer said.
Sources said at the time as the police team reached the park there were as many as 30 couples of young women and men sitting under the trees of the park. Many of the couples had left the park having seen a police party, all in uniform, approaching toward them. According to a private security guard posted at the Jubilee Park, the girls come to the park with faces wrapped with a cloth by sitting pillion rider with her boyfriend who put on a helmet.
