lax security at St Xavier's College

VIDHI PODDAR

Soon after Khusboo Kumari was brutally beheaded by her boy friend in 2011 in St Xavier’s College campus, the authorities had made it mandatory for the students to show ID card at the college gate. The security guards were also instructed to allow the entry of those students only who have college ID along with them.

The directive is now being followed more in the breach at the prestigious college premises. The security guards are only for namesake as they neither check the student’s identity card nor enquire the visitors the purpose of their visit.

A student of Mass Communication and Video Production (MCVP) Department Sayantani Sinha said, “A couple of days ago some of my friends from Marwari College came to meet me within the college premises. They freely moved inside the campus without being asked for the Id card or the purpose of visit to the college.”

She further added that even we are also not asked for presenting ID card before entering the college gate. Requesting anonymity a college staff said, “laws are meant only for a few months with no relevance in the long run. There are a large number of laws made regarding security for the students but the plans are on papers gathering dust on the table of the concerned authority.”

He further added that the instruction was carried out scrupulously for few months now the pervious scenario is being maintained. When the college vice-principal Nabor lakra was contacted, he said, “I have asked the security guards to leave no stone unturned in ensuring the security of the students. If they do not follow theinstruction then I am not liable for presenting an answer for it. Its better you ask the guards regarding this.”
