Actor-director Kunal Jaiswal is set to make his feature film directorial debut with a horror-thriller based on black magic, scheduled for release in 2026. The film’s first shooting schedule will take place in Jamshedpur, bringing rare national-level cinematic attention to Jharkhand’s capital.

Currently in pre-production, the yet-untitled film explores psychological tension and cultural fear surrounding black magic. According to Jaiswal, the narrative goes beyond horror to focus on human emotion, trauma, and belief systems.

“This is not just about what people fear, it's about why they fear it,” Jaiswal said. “The horror element is important, but what drives the story is how belief can shape reality. Shooting the first schedule in Ranchi brings the rootedness and authenticity I’m looking for.”

The choice of Jamshedpur is both creative and symbolic. With its blend of urban and semi-rural settings, the city offers the perfect backdrop to ground the story in realism. Local culture and landscapes will play a key role in establishing the film’s folklore-inspired tone.

Originally from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Jaiswal is among a new wave of filmmakers from smaller cities reshaping India’s storytelling landscape. Born to Rameshwar and Asha Jaiswal, he credits his parents for their unwavering support in his artistic journey.

He began his career as an actor in television, earning recognition through roles such as Badri in Perfect Pati and Rajendra Choudhary in Harphoul Mohini. He also appeared as Ajmal in Chhoti Sardarni, played Kabir in the web series Talab, and featured as Ram in the film Kissebaaz.

His transition behind the camera began with music videos. Jaiswal’s directorial debut, Tum Yaad Na Aya Karo (Zee Music Company), reflected on lost love. He later directed Bas Tera, Shaam Se, Sajda, and Tera Sajda, all exploring heartbreak and longing. In 2024, he collaborated with singer Shahid Mallya for Khicha Khicha, marked by subdued urban visuals and emotional depth. This matured further in his 2025 video Tu To Bhatka Hai, starring Gurmeet Choudhary and Tridha Choudhury, which earned praise for its atmospheric storytelling.

Known for minimal dialogue, expressive silences, and strong emotional cues, Jaiswal plans to carry these traits into his debut feature. The horror-thriller will weave Indian superstitions with psychological fear, using black magic as both a narrative and symbolic device.

While casting details are yet to be revealed, the production team has confirmed that filming will begin in late 2025 in and around Jamshedpur. For local artists, technicians, and aspiring filmmakers, the project offers a rare chance to engage with a mainstream production.
