A gang of unknown burglars decamped with ornaments and valuables worthover Rs4 lakh from a house on Road No 1 at Olidih under Mango police station area at the wee hours of Tuesday. Taking advantage of a whole-night kirtan organised in the neighbourhood, the miscreants targeted the house of Kishori Prasad a local businessman.

Sources said there all the members in the family, including the house-owner Kishori Prasad were sleeping when the incident took place. Superintendent of police (City) Kartik S who inspected the site said that they have received a complaint of burglary, in which the informant Kishori Prasad has mentioned that the burglars have taken away gold ornaments and valuables worth over Rs4 lakh.

Kartik, when queried, said that those who committed the burglary must be local and they must have the prior information about the whole-night religious function at the locality where the crime was committed.

Of late there have been a spurt in house break-ins and robbery cases in the city. Though claiming that such incidents, in a city with a population of over 13 lakh was inevitable, the police admit to the involvement of some 'active' gangs and have intensified steps and suggested several measures to check the rising crime graph.

Meanwhile, the police have rounded up two or three persons on suspicion of being involved in the burglary. “We are involved in investigation and it is too early to comment. Though we have picked up two-three persons in connection with the burglary, this was just on suspicion," said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

The house-owner, Prasad, when asked, said that it was a surprising thing for them that the burglars committed the crime by breaking the door, but no one could hear him.
