In a broad daylight robbery attempt at a jewellery shop near Lalpur Chowk— Capital city’s busy business hub— two jewellers sustained bullet injuries on Monday afternoon.

Three persons on Monday afternoon around 2 p.m entered ‘Gahna Ghar’ a jewellery store at Amravati Complex with an attempt to rob the shop. While three were inside the shop, two of the accomplices were waiting outside.

The three criminals on gun point tried to rob the shop owner, but the two brothers and owner of the shop Rohit Khirwal and Rahul Khirwal who were sitting at the shop resisted the criminals’ attempt. At this the robbers  started firing at them.  The three criminals after the incident escaped from the spot on two bikes challenging city police.

After the incident, panic gripped the area with nearby shops putting down their shutters. The injured were rushed to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) by nearby shopkeepers.

As the news of firing incident spread, senior police officials including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anish Gupta, City Superintendent of Police (SP), Harilal Chauhan and others rushed the spot and later also visited RIMS. Sources said that the condition of two brothers is stable but they are under observation. SSP Anish Gupta informed that the incident took place around 2 p.m when five criminals reached Amravati complex on two bikes.

“While two of the criminals waited outside the shop, three entered with an attempt to loot the shop. When shopkeeper’s son resisted them to succeed in their attempt then they started firing which resulted in critical injury of owner of shop Banwarilal Khirwal’s two sons Rohit Khirwal and Rahul Khirwal. Both of them received one bullet each,” said Gupta.

The SSP further said that a special investigation team of the district police will be constituted to nab the criminals. “The police personnel have been asked to search CCTV footage to identify the criminals,” he added.

Reacting on the incident BJP’s Rajyasabha MP from Jharkhand, Mahesh Poddar and Ranchi MP, Sanjay Seth jointly issued a statement and condemned the incident. Both the leaders have said that the criminals will not be spared.  Expressing displeasure over the incident Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Kunal Ajmani said that the administration should take immediate action against the criminals and provide proper safety to businessmen otherwise the Chamber will hold statewide agitation.
