Intensive care more effective in saving retinas: Katoch

Vitreo Retina Society of Jharkhand (VRSJ) organised its annual conference on the theme of diagnostic and therapeutic role of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

The conference featured several presentations by renowned ophthalmologists of Ranchi and other states on the increasing use of OCT for diagnosing glaucoma and retina-related complications due to old age, blood pressure and diabetes in their earlier stage, making the treatment to follow more effective and easier.

VRSJ president Dr BP Kashyap and Convener Dr Bharti Kashyap, well-known ophthalmologist of the State capital, inaugurated the conference along with Dr Deeksha Katoch, Assistant Professor, Vitreo Retina Services, PGI, Chandigarh, Dr Mohita Sharma, National Secretary, Women Ophthalmological Society and others on Sunday.

In the technical session which followed, Dr Bharti Kashyap informed about the needle and dye-less version of OCT angiography in detail. Medical conditions of retina and glaucoma can be accurately detected through this technique, she said.

Dr Deeksha Katoch elaborated on the diagnosis and treatment using OCT in cases of swelling in macula of eyes due to diabetes. She also talked about the age-related macular degeneration in elders and benefits of using OCT in detecting and correcting the condition.

“Every third person is a diabetic and India is soon going to be the country with the most diabetic patients. This adds to the responsibility of ophthalmologists to identify and refer the cases of retina-related complications due to diabetes on time. Intensive care in earlier stages is much more effective than strict control practised later,” said Dr Katoch.

Dr Mohita Sharma shed light on the intravitreal steroid injection to treat diabetic macular edema. She also announced the beginning of Jharkhand chapter of Women Ophthalmological Society. “This is a platform for women ophthalmologists to learn and gain more skills in their field. Starting from United States of America, the initiative reached India and Jharkhand will be the 11th State chapter of the Society. Dr Bharti Kashyap and Dr Vandana have taken this initiative to empower women eye specialists in Jharkhand,” stated Dr Sharma.

Following this, Dr Neeraj explained about the use of OCT in diagnosis and cure of other retina diseases apart from those resulting from old age, blood pressure and diabetes. Dr Anshuman Sinha took the audience through a presentation on retinal venous occlusion and Dr Tirthjeet Moitra presented OCT from a general ophthalmologist’s view.
