The cut-offs marks for various merit based undergraduate courses are likely to go up this year due to higher number of students scoring good marks. A record 2.70 lakh students have secured first class in the matriculation examination this year which is much more than previous year. Last year 2.89 lakh students passed the matriculation examination, while this year the number is around four lakh.
Experts claim that getting admission to undergraduate courses at premier colleges will be tough this time due to the large number of students scoring good marks. A teacher at Dr Shyma Prasad Mookerjee University requesting anonymity said, “Last year around 2.80 lakh students had cleared matriculation examination, while this year the number of students getting first division itself is around 2.70 lakh which means that number of students who have secured first division is much more than previous year.”
“There will be more rush of students at intermediate colleges as more students have secured first divisions. The college will be left with no other alternative but to raise cut-off marks or go for other ways for admission of students at undergraduate streams,” added the teacher.
Also this year around 1.20 lakh students have secured more than 60 per cent marks in matriculation examination. In the last ten years, around 4 lakh students have cleared matriculation examinations. Prior to this year's results, in 2014 a record 3.60lakh students had cleared matriculation examinations.
It is not that the percentage of matriculation results has increased for the first time in the state. If we look at the result of the year 2020 itself, then 16 percent more students were successful in the examination as compared to the year 2018. Even after the increase of 16 percent in the result, the number of students who passed matriculation in 2020 had increased by only 35 thousand. This year there has been an increase of 20% in the result as compared to the previous year, but the number of passing students is 1.26 lakh more.
Experts claim that though there will be a big rush of students in getting admission at premier undergraduate courses and colleges, but contrary to this, the intermediate seats at +2 schools, affiliated colleges and intermediate colleges will be full this year.
Intermediate studies in the State are conducted at four different levels. There are 98304 Intermediate seats in constituent colleges. There are 195840 seats in 510 plus two schools. Apart from this, intermediate studies are also done in affiliated and inter colleges in the State. In these too there are about two lakh seats. There are about five lakh seats in intermediate, but the number of students passing matriculation in State used to be around three lakh till now. Due to this, two lakh seats used to remain vacant every year. But this year, it is hopeful that colleges’ vacant seats will be full.
