High schools to get funds to purchase sports items

RR Srivastava

After the creation of Jharkhand, for the first time, the high schools of the district will get funds to purchase sports items. The human resource development Ministry has sanctioned the amount and  distributed to all the districts through national secondary school education project.

This decision and amount has created a unique problem before the officials of the district education office and district secondary school education project officials. Actually the Government has sanctioned Rs 20,000 to purchase the sports item for each school. Though the amount is sufficient but the number of schools in each district has been restricted to only four as per the Government’s letter. The letter of the HRD says that the Government has sanctioned amount for purchase of sports item for 100 high schools of the State — most of the districts have been given the quota of four schools — in which Hazaribagh district is also included, while in some districts students of five schools will get the opportunity of playing with new sport items.

As per the letter the district education will have to select the schools on the basis of play ground available in the schools, number of students in the school, performance in inter school or in district level competitions etc.. Everyone knows that the condition of sports at high school level is very poor in our State. The schools are suffering with the shortage of sports item as well as sports teacher too. The play grounds of most of the schools are in bad condition nowadays.

After years the Government has taken care of the sports at the high school level so despite all the complexities the district administration has decided to move ahead in the direction of proper utilisation of this amount. The district education office has begun the search process and as per sources very soon the list of selected four schools will become clear.

As per the sources in the list of four schools two will be from town area and two from village area. An amount of Rs 20,000 has been sanctioned for each school. From this amount the administration will have to purchase football set, volleyball set, carom board, dumbbell, height gauge, pole vault, javelin, shot put ball etc. For it a committee will be constituted as per government direction.  The district education officer will be the chairman of this committee while DSE, principals of selected schools, president of SMDC and selected sports coaches of the district will be the member of this committee. Purchase can be made only from Government registered shops.
