High cut-off marks big hurdle for DU dream

VIDHI PODDAR

The University of Delhi (DU) continues to be the most preferred university for under graduate studies among students of Ranchi. But, the craze for the university is getting gradually getting down by the high cut off marks for taking admission in the constituent colleges of DU.

like every year majority of the students from Ranchi after leaving school are dreaming of getting into prestigious DU colleges such as Hindu College, St Stephen’s College, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). But, with the high cut off marks students securing marks even more than 90 per cent are finding it difficult to get admission in prominent colleges of DU.

Ruchikka Mittal who had secured 93.8 percentages in her intermediate examination said, “Getting good percentage is not enough to get admission in good colleges at DU. I wanted to pursue my further studies from lady Sri Ram College but due to very high cut off marks I failed to get entry there. Finally, I took admission in St Xavier’s college, Ranchi.”

As per the cut off lists announced on June 15, SRCC has kept 100 per cent as the best of four subjects aggregate for admission in B.Com Honours course for students who had not pursue the stream at intermediate level. While, lady SRCC and Kirori Mal College have announced their first cut off marks to 97 per cent.

Meanwhile, in Hindu College, commerce students need an aggregate of 95.5 per cent while non–commerce students require 99 per cent to land an admission in the B-com Honours course.

Similarly, science courses too have raised their margins. Hansraj College has increased its cut off by nine per cent for chemistry, for Physics and Zoology it has risen by 5 per cent and for Botany by 6 per cent. Notably, these cut off marks had a massive effect on the students especially with high percentage.

Akanksha Kumari, Student of Delhi Public School (DPS) Ranchi, who had secured 94.6 per cent in her best four aggregate said, “The impact is clearly visible with the huge amount of frustrated text messages going rounds. We work hard to get into best colleges but at last are landing on local colleges. It is really unjust to us.”

Meanwhile, in the discussion another problem which came into light was where other Indian colleges are including Environmental studies into best four aggregate, DU does not consider it.“It is really ridiculous to figure out how these colleges are coming up with their admission criteria. Due to this many eligible students are not able to get admission in the country’s prestigious colleges,” said Student of DPS Ranchi Harsh Bajoria who is hoping for the cut off to go down in the second list.
