After devastating water currents ruined the undergoing beautification work of Harmu River in Ranchi, one more Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared by the Urban Development Department to deal with the shortcomings of the last one.
“looking at the shortcomings of the first one, another DPR is being prepared where the beautification and broadening of the Harmu River will be done from the origin to Swarnrekha,” said Urban Development Minister CP Singh.
Officials on the other hand, blamed it on heavy rains in the adjoining areas of Ranchi that ruined the entire hard work done in the last several months.
“Near Mukti Dham, there is a junction of Original River and the water coming from drains. Water coming from the drains from Kishorganj side proved to be fatal for the ongoing project which ruined the entire construction work being undertaken by us,” said a Jharkhand Urban Development Corporation (JUDCO) official requesting anonymity.
The officials further added that the presence of junk materials on both sides of the river further added to the problem which got washed away in the flood which occurred on last Saturday. “Engineering could only be applied where there is hard soil....it fails working on the garbage,” he said.
Now, fresh designing for the construction work was being done, broadening the base as well surface of the river, added the official. Garbage near Mukti Dham will also be cleared making a fresh start to avoid any such incident in future.
Harmu River located in the State capital is being rejuvenated involving `87 crore and a target of 30 months has been given to the Mumbai-based M/S Eagle Infra India limited for the completion of beautification and conservation work.
The riverbeds will also have a 2.5 meter pathway to be constructed on both sides of it facilitating the commoners to stroll on it.
The issue related to rejuvenation and beautification of Ranchi’s life line Harmu River was being raised by the politicians and social activists for quite some time. Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani even raised the issue in Parliament expressing that the restoration of the past glory of the river was very important for the city residents. Nathwani had alleged that the haphazard encroachment along the beds of the river has done irreparable damage to it and spoiled the green patches it supported.
