Thirty eight llB (Bachelors of law) students of 2010-15 batch, 8 students in llM (Masters of law) category were awarded with the medals and certificates in the first convocation held at National University of Study and Research in law (NUSRl) on Saturday. 23 law graduates received endowment medals in various categories.
Governor Draupadi Murmu, Judge of Supreme Court M Y Eqbal, Jharkhand HC Chief Justice and Chancellor of NUSRl Virender Singh, Vice-Chancellor of NUSRl Professor B C Nirmal along with other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
While felicitating law graduates and appreciating their efforts, Governor Draupadi Murmu said, “Being the first batch the students have an onerous duty upon them to bring good name to the institution as well as the State by their good work. India has the privilege of being led by a good number of illustrious barristers and lawyers throughout its Independence movement. The law university has established several research centres which include tribal rights, intellectual property rights, human rights, legal aid and moot court society for overall development of students in legal studies.”
Speaking about the challenges posed by socio-economic changes, Justice M Y Eqbal, who happens to be the visitor’s nominee, said, “The basic motive of all the National law Universities is to meet out challenges post socio-economic changes that have been taking place since the onset of economic liberalisation in India.”
Emphasizing on the condition of law institutions functioning across the country, Justice Eqbal added, “Most of our law colleges and departments are perennially cash strapped and struggle to retain qualified and motivated law teachers. Some colleges also function in a much politicised environment, where serious academic pursuits often take a backseat. However, all these can be effectively solved with some initiatives, will power and sense of commitment.”
Addressing the gathering on role of lawyers and other developmental activities, which took place during his tenure, Vice Chancellor of NUSRl, B C Nirmal said, “The faculty along with the students of the University has actively participated in various national and international conferences and in undertaking teaching and research projects. We have established centres of learning in various categories to cultivate research aptitude and to provide opportunities for exchange of ideas with renowned academicians.”
Students of the first batch of NUSRl are presently working in top corporate law firms like luthra & luthra Associates, Amarchand Mangaldas and leading banks like HDFC and multinational companies, including Vodafone. Some of them have chosen the path of litigation and are practicing in Supreme Court of India and High courts of Jharkhand and other states under able guidance of top notch senior advocates of national repute. Students receiving llM degrees have already joined in academic positions in top universities of India.
NUSRl has already conducted a massive study programme sponsored by World Bank in the field of land governance in association with the Department of land Resources, Union of India and Department of land Revenue, Government of Jharkhand. NUSRl also publishes a journal on law and policy on a regular basis.
