Gangster Akhilesh Singh (39) was sent to jail after his two-day police remand ended on Sunday.

The gangster's wife Garima Singh, who was also on the police remand for interrogation in connection with a forgery case registered with the Birsanagar thana, has also been lodged at  Ghaghidih Central Jail, where security has been beefed up.

Superintendent of Ghaghidih Central Jail Satyendra Kumar Chaudhury said an order has been given to the guards on prison-gate duty for maintaining strict vigil while frisking the visitors.

"At present we have over 120 guards in the prison and all the guards have been asked to remain alert. We have also asked the guards to ensure that no unwanted materials, like cell phone, charger, and mobile SIM card may get into the jail," said Chaudhury.

The central jail superintendent said all the 24 CCTV cameras installed inside the prison have been checked to ensure the footage of the jail inmates are taken effectively.

In March 2009, Paramjeet Singh, who was an arch rival of the gangster Akhilesh was shot dead inside the Ghaghidih Central Jail, prompting the supporters of Paramjeet to lynch the shooter soon afterward.

Chaudhury said a few days after the 2009 shooting inside the central jail, the district administration had sent several of the key associates of Akhilesh from Ghaghidih to other jails across the State. Meanwhile, OC, Birsanagar, Upendra Narayan Singh said after the police remand was over Akhilesh and his wife were sent back to the central jail under tight security.

Sources said that authorities of the jail were prompted to further tighten security as there is a probability of a gangwar between members of Akhilesh Singh gang and Paramjeet Singh, who are lodged in the jail.

Actually, the arrest of Akhilesh Singh had become a challenge for the police and administration which had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh on the head of the fugitive. Son of Chandragupt Singh, general secretary of Jharkhand Police Association, Akhilesh set up a network  of extortioists and shooters.
