Fire breaks out in DVC Chanderpura thermal plant

SURESH NIKHAR

The power generation in old unit number-1 and 2 of the Chanderpura Thermal Power Station (CTPS) was disrupted on Tuesday as its cable trench attached to the units caught fire. The damaged caused to the cable and power generation has led to a loss of several crores to the Damodar Valley Corporation, according to an estimate.

As per information given by CE and project head BN Singh although the fire was controlled with in a hours with the fire tender avaible inside the power plant premises. It has further exposed the worn–out condition of the four or five decade old cables of the units and the need to replace them one by one gradually before a normal generation of power is expected.

The Chanderpura Thermal power plant (CTPS) chief engineer and project head BN Singh said the fire affected the power generation about 200 MW only for about one or two days. The oil kept in the cable caught fire sending smoke. But, he claimed that the fire did not cause any substantial damage to any of plant’s machineries nor did it affected the revival process of unit number-1and 2.

According to sources, the CISF fire wing of the CTPS was pressed into service immediately. But it took them around one hour to bring the fire completely under control. The fire was caused due to a technical snag in the cable trench. Unit–1 and 2 have a total generation capacity of 200 MW.
