Dustbins go into bins as city residents compelled to throw garbage on streets

PNS

Unavailability of dustbins in sufficient number at designated places in colonies of Ranchi is posing a big hurdle in managing solid waste generated from households in bulk. Annoyed with the approach of Essel Infra that has failed miserably in dealing with solid waste disposal issue here, even RMC officials are simply playing the blame game despite of the orders received from Urban Development Minister CP Singh who had recently asked the officials to streamline the door-to-door garbage collection service at any cost.

Forget about door-to-door garbage collection coverage, when enquired about the status of dustbins decked up in sufficient number at residential areas, commercial hubs, no officially records have been kept by the Municipal Corporation officials that have been installed during the ‘Swacchta Sarvekshan 2016’. Notably, RMC had to install around 250 dustbins at a radius of 500 metres within the Municipal periphery to manage the disposal of discarded items in a systematic way.

The city residents residing in different localities frequently complain about the unavailability of dustbins. “In the absence of dustbins, people tend to throw garbage here and there that eventually creates muddle. The Ranchi Municipal Corporation has turned a blind eye towards those places where the overflowing stinking bins are left for long days without paying any heed to it adding more to the woes,” said a resident of Kokar.

On the other hand, playing the same old broken records Minister CP Singh said “Orders have been already given to clear garbage strewn streets. It is hard to simply monitor minute details. Civic sense must be developed for keeping the city clean, only enforcement cell personnel cannot do everything. Also, we are analyzing the work of the concerned agency, action will be taken accordingly. Dustbins are installed at different places in sufficient number.”

It is not just the door-to-door garbage collection that is yet to gain pace. Also, the toll free number launched by the company recently is lying useless with no one to answer the queries put forward by the city residents on solid waste management. When contacted the officials of Essel Infra, none of them were available for comment.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Sanjiv Vijayawargia said that the company will be blacklisted in September as it has even failed to deliver 25 per cent of what has been expected from it before handling them the project.

“We too get complains about the mismanagement. From door-to-door garbage collection process to maintaining the time-table of collecting garbage from different, it has failed miserably.” However, even the Deputy Mayor remained tight lipped when asked about the alternate arrangement for managing solid waste after blacklisting the firm.
