The Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET), Ranchi will begin two diploma programmes for the academic year 2019-20. The two three-year diplomas, Diploma in Plastics Technology (DPT) and Diploma in Plastics Mould Technology (DPMT), are aimed at creating skilled labour for the plastics and allied industries in the State.

Talking to media persons here on Thursday, Director & Head CIPET, Ranchi AK Rao,—Skill Development, Technology, Academic and Research—framework in our institutes. Skill training, designing, tooling, processing, testing and quality control, all things are done at our institute, which is a great exposure for our students. Till now, we had skill development courses spanning from 3 to 6 months, but the new diploma courses will boost plastics industry employment in the State” he said.

The national institute, which has 37 centres across the country, will be conducting All India CIPNETJEE 2019 on July 7 for admission to the two courses. The Ranchi centre has 120 seats each for both the courses, of which 80 percent will be reserved for in-State students. The applicants need to be standard Xth pass in Maths, Science, and English to be eligible for the courses. The deadline for application submission is June 30. The application fee is Rs 750 for General and Backward Caste students, and Rs 300 for ST/SC students. The fees for the courses are Rs 20-22,000 per semester, with extra fee for hostel accommodation. The academic session will commence from August 1.

Talking about job opportunities in the sector, Rao claimed CIPET students are placed in various plastic manufacturing companies across the country. “27 out of our 30 students were placed in factories of MNCs in Noida and Gujarat. After completing the diploma course, our students can earn a minimum of Rs 15,000 per month,” he claimed, at a time when unemployment rate in the country is breaking all records.

Upon being asked about the about the low package placements for a course that will cost around Rs 1.5 lakh, making it unaffordable for a lot of students, Rao said that it will just be the initial package, and that there is a lot of scope in the industry right now, despite its environmental and implementation challenges. “There are many avenues open for the students to explore after graduation. And I feel it is better that the youth is employed in whatever capacity, rather than unemployed. Unemployment results in crime and nuisance in the city.”
