Dimna road turns into danger zone

PNS

A 70-year-old morning walker was run over by an unidentified heavy vehicle while he was on a walk early  in the morning on Dimna Road under Mango police station area. This was second morning walkers' death on the same road in three months. This has led to a panic among the morning walkers.

The victim, Murari Singh, was a resident of Parasnagar in Mango. Some neighbours informed his family members that he was lying in a pool of blood near the Gramin Bank.

The police arrived at the spot and recovered the body to be sent to the MGM Medical College mortuary for post-mortem having registered a case of fatal mishap against unknown driver.

Officer-in-charge, Mango police station, Fulan Nath confirmed about the accidental death of the elderly morning walker. "As per the information, the mishap took place at about 5.15 am. We are trying to find out the vehicle involved in the mishap," said Nath. The officer-in-charge said there was no witness as to how did the mishap took place.

The victim’s son Mahendra Singh said that his father used to go for morning walk every day and they are still in shock as to what happened to him. His father used to run a hotel at Chandil, but as he had become old, he had kept himself away from managing the hotel.

Notably, this was the second such incident to have claimed life of a morning walker in the past three months.  Earlier on August 30, a 63-year-old man was killed down by a truck on Dimna Road, sending shock waves across the Mango area.

Deputy superintendent of police (traffic) Vivekanand Thakur said they are concerned about the frequent road mishap taking place on Dimna road, but expressed his helplessness to check the trend.

Dimna Road at Mango is turning accident-prone zone. On an average two fatal mishaps take place every month on the Dimna Road alone, and more than 14 persons sustain injuries.

As the Dimna Road is the only link for the heavy vehicles to the NH No 33, the Dimna Road is getting ncreasingly accident-prone.

The people living around and those commute through the locality have to remain in fear of road mishap. According to information, encroachments on the footpath adjacent to Dimna Road are causing inconvenience for the citizens and are causing accidents, while the traffic police are playing the role of a silent spectator.

The road from Mango bridge to Dimna Road has been encroached by stallholders. The shopkeepers have displayed furniture, electronic motor and cycles on the footpath. The residents complained that administration was not taking action against the encroachers. The residents have demanded of the authorities to take action against the encroachers.

Meanwhile, traffic police also cite rising and absence of median on many stretches among the major reasons for the increase in the number of accidents. For motorists, the inadequate illumination especially at night adds to the challenges posed by congestion on the road as a result of the movement of heavy vehicles.
