CUJ first batch students seek placements

Sumedha Chaudhury

The students of first five year integrated courses of Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) will be graduating soon but placements of majority of the students seem to take time. Around 73 students who joined the university established in 2009 belong to departments of Mass Communication, Management, applied Mathematics and English languages wherein only a handful have got job offers from the university’s side till date.

A number of students are worried for their careers as their final semester exams will commence from May 2 and the university authorities are still deferring the “placement process” in the name of ongoing elections, they said.

Sharing the problem, a final year students of mass communication requesting for anonymity said, “Our former VC had assured us that we all will be placed by the time we pass out. But, the concerned department and placement officials constantly tell us that nothing much can be done due to elections. Most of us are looking for job opportunities on our own.”

“Jobs in media are never guaranteed though we are trying to invite some media houses. Campus interview is no where applicable for mass communication students. I have told my students to join anywhere through their sources. We will coordinate in the required formalities,” centre for mass communication head Professor Santosh Kumar Tewari said.

Similarly, Centre for Applied Mathematics coordinator Dr Pradip Kumar Parida said, “As of now there is no such status. Please contact Dilip Kumar Banerjee as he is looking after this process.”

A professor of Centre for Business Administration said that their placement is encouraging and few companies are expected to visit here by next week. According to sources, only one company named SMSRC had conducted campus interview for CUJ’s management final year students wherein two boys have been hired on a package of Rs 1.8 lakh per annum. The student strength of this department is comparatively more than the other three outgoing batches.

However, when the university’s OSD (Planning) Dilip Kumar Banerjee, who at present, is given the additional responsibility of placement coordinator was contacted, said, “Nevertheless, our students are bright and have succeeded in various noted competitions. But, our university is new in the market. Obviously, it will take some time for companies to know CUJ. We are hopeful to bring few this month and after May 15 when the final semester exams are over.”

“English and Maths students are themselves planning to pursue higher studies. We are worried for mass communication and management students,” he added.
