The traffic police’s special drive against illegal parking to bring to book those who park their vehicles in the ‘no parking zones’ and choke arterial roads across the state capital is showing good results. People have been deterred from parking their vehicles from the non-demarcated zones.

Haphazardly parked vehicles were resulting in encroachment of roads and indefinite traffic jams. Moreover, it was posing big problems for the pedestrians and adding to the poor visibility of shops coupled with bad shopping experiences. But after the drive city main road was found congestion free during the peak hours.

Traffic SP Rajeev Ranjan sharing the information about the same said, “It is too easy to see the result of any drive. The main idea behind this is to educate people about the illegal parking as it obstructs the movement of other vehicles in city arterial roads and main carriageway.”

Based on comprehensive survey of areas traffic police have demarcated around 35 areas where parking problem was throwing traffic out of gear. During the drive the traffic cops have picked up the vehicles from the stretch along Firayalal right up to BigBazar, from Uday Misthan Bhandar (at lapur Chowk) to Amrawati complex and from Reliance fresh of Ratu road to Galaxia mall. As many as 150 vehicles have been picked up and around 250 offenders have been slapped a fine of Rs 600 for violating the rules.

“These are the busy arterial roads of the city and we have to keep them free from congestion. Numerous of measures have been taken by the department in the past but to avail. This drive is proving beneficial in making people understand the need of adhering by the traffic rules,” added Traffic DSP AK Mishra.

According to statistics provided in the official website of the Motor Vehicle Department, the state capital has more than four lakh registered vehicles. Out of which 2, 50,824 are two wheelers and around 80,513 cars. Notably, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has demarcated only 20 parking lots which has capacity of accommodating merely 1200 cars and 500 two wheelers.

“To end the problem from root cause it is essential to increase the number of parking zones. The department has informed the officials of civic body to demarcate more number of traffic zones in the state capital,” said Ranjan.Besides, picking up vehicles the officials during the drive were also removing the makeshift market from the roads jeopardizing the life of many.

“The makeshift owners outside Nagababa Khatal have been removed during the drive and the cops are keeping an eye on them,” added Ranjan.
