The heavy spell of rain experienced in the beginning of August that drenched the State and the Capital city has played a significant role in diminishing the rainfall deficit across Jharkhand bringing it down to 16%,  which is now in the normal range, as of on August 7.

As per the statistics shared by the MET Centre Ranchi, on August 1 Jharkhand had a cumulative rainfall deficit of 38%. The intense bout of showers for almost three consecutive days pulled it down to 19% as of on August 3. In meteorological terms +19% to -19% of rainfall activity is considered normal

The bulletin released by the Meteorological Department showed that from June 1 to August 7, the State has received a total of 489.6 mm of rainfall which is 16% lesser that the normal amount of 581.9 mm that is required during the specified time period.

Since the onset of monsoon this year, for the first time two districts Garhwa and Palamu have recorded surplus rain with each receiving 5% above normal levels. The former has received 537.5 mm of rain as against the normal amount of 509.6 mm while for the latter 480.5 mm of rain has been recorded as against the required amount of 455.9 mm.

The State capital too has experienced normal rainfall activity so far with 602.9 mm of rain realized against the normal amount of 600.9 mm.

At 53% Pakur has the highest deficiency with only 311.7 mm of rain received followed by Lohardaga at 43% with 335.5 mm of rainfall recorded.

The weathermen have also forecast heavy showers at isolated places in the western parts of Jharkhand for August 8 while the north eastern and central parts are likely to receive heavy rain on August 10 and August 11.

“The position of the monsoon trough is favourable for Jharkhand. Along with this  a cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas in Jharkhand will also cause rainfall activity in the coming few days,” said Director MET Centre Ranchi Abhishek Anand.
