The underground coal mines water can quench the thirst of Dhanbad, feels a professor of the lone government owned engineering college of state the Birsa Institute of Technology ( BIT) - Sindri.
Professor Girjesh Kumar said ,"Despite plenty of water resources in the district trapped in underground mines, unfortunately it faces about 68 percent water scarcity to cater its different requirements including domestic, industrial, agriculture and other users."
While addressing a seminar on ‘Water Conservation’ organised at Sindri College he said, "The district requires about 270 million gallons of water per day but gets just 87 million gallons from different sources."
"Thus the district faces a deficit of 183.6 million gallons.of water per day,” he said.
He said there is no dearth of ground water resources and if arrangements were made for purification of underground mines water in different sectors and its proper distribution , the water crisis may be solved to a large extent.
Explaining available water ratio, he said around 97 percent of available water in the world happens to be salted and only 03 percent water is fresh out of which more than half is in the form of glashier.. Thus we need to use water in the proper manner .
Prof Anil Kumar of Sindri College moderated the programme while principal Prof Nakul Prasad welcomed guests and students .
