CMPDI receives Patent for development of Indigenous tool for ascertaining quality of Explosives and Accessories used in mines of CIL

PNS

The Patent office, Govt. of India, issued Patent certificate to Blasting Cell, CMPDI, Ranchi and IIT-Kharagpur for the invention of, "An Improved and Highly Economical Instrument/Tool for measuring Velocity of Detonation of various types of Explosives and Initiators and Scattering/Delay timing of Accessories products and the method for the same (ACCUTIME)" on 13.12.2023 for a period of 20 years from the date of filing i.e 23.09.2013. Precise value of Velocity of Detonation (VoD) can be acquired by using the above tool.

The above instrument and method will help to achieve blast optimization for a given geo-mining conditions and to design blasts with large degree of certainty. S.C. Kar, then Chief Manager (Mining) of CMPDI was the Project Co-coordinator and Dr. A.K. Jha, then Sr. Manager (Mining) of CMPDI was the Project Leader at the time of filing application for Patent. In the aforesaid Project, the Blasting Cell of CMPDIL was the Principal Implementing Agency and IIT, Kharagpur under the leadership of Dr. B. Deb was the Sub-Implementing Agency.

The quality of explosives and accessories plays a pivotal role in ascertaining the post blast performance of the explosives and accessories products. In order to minimize the overall cost of production under present mine to “mill concept” considering subsystem utilization after blasting viz. loading, hauling and transportation, it is pertinent to use high quality of explosives and accessories products reliably for any given drilling, blasting and initiation pattern. The development of indigenous tool for ascertaining the quality of explosives and accessories will improve the techno-economics of the blast performance improving the overall mine economics.

In the present scenario of burgeoning demand of coal, development of indigenous tool for ascertaining the explosives and accessories performance will result into overall mine economics in terms of reliability, effectiveness and efficiency of blast performance which will benefit CIL and also Coal Sector as a whole.

CMPDI received its first patent in December, 2022 for its innovative work of Developing, “A System and Method for Controlling Generation and Movement of Fugitive Dust”. Patent is a testament for the technical prowess of CMPDI.
