CMC kicks off inspection of RWH structures in buildings

PNS

Chas Municipal Corporation (CMC) officials started the inspection of buildings to assess the condition of rainwater harvesting (RWH) structures, informed Mayor Bholu Paswan.

Flouting norms to adopt rainwater harvesting systems (RWH) erection of private as well as government buildings is on the rise here in Bokaro despite the fact that the Government had made the system mandatory for each building across the State, he said.

Groundwater is very fast depleting in the CMC area, earlier in the year 2000 the groundwater level was at 60 feet and later started depleting consistently. In 2005 it reached at 100 feet and in 2015 it comes to 150 feet and presently the groundwater level in CMC area is at 185 feet, said an official.

In 2016, the Government made it mandatory for a building constructed on a 30 x 40 square feet site and above to install rainwater harvesting systems to tackle with the depleting groundwater level but over 90 percent household under CMC area till date have adopted this system, sources said.

Beside houses in the CMC area several government buildings in Bokaro are yet to adopt rainwater harvesting system including administrative buildings, Sadar Hospital, ANM training Centre and others. It is happening due to the lack of groundwater recharge. The rise in concrete jungles and rapid urbanization are another reason behind it.

Except few, over thousands of households are yet to set up a rainwater harvesting system. Regardless of the repeated attempts of the Municipal Corporation to make the public understand the need and importance of rainwater harvesting, said Paswan.
