A Class 7 student and swachhta ambassador on Friday gifted an environment-friendly innovative toilet made of used plastic bottles and fly-ash for underprivileged children of private school.

Mondrita Chatterjee, a student of Telco-based Hill Top School, has sacrificed her piggy amount to help in construction of two toilets at Manav Vikas High School in Garudbasa, near Prakashnagar under Telco police station which were inaugurated by East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amit Kumar.

Daughter of  Amitav Chatterjee, director-cum-cluster head, Meditrina Hospitals, who had already donated money from her piggy banks to construct toilet in Haludboni (near Parsudih) earlier this year and another toilet at Kendradih village in Chota Govindpur in December 2016.

The objective behind the toilet was to utilise unused plastic bottles and slag ash, which were available in and around the city in plenty. Around 3000 empty plastic bottles were required for construction of the toilet. They were collected from the nearby residential colonies and the majority of bottles by students from their homes.

“In the month of June during a meeting with Sanjay Kumar Pandey,  (then deputy collector at CM camp office and currently special officer Mango Notified Area Committee) I liked the idea of a toilet constructed with used plastic bottles and fly-ash and gave up Rs 32,000 in my piggy bank for the toilet construction work,” said Mondrita, her twinkle in her at the sight of the innovative toilet.

Incidentally, the two toilets (one each for boy and girl) have been constructed using 12,000 used plastic bottles and nearly five tons of fly-ash.  The total cost of the project was Rs 1.25 lakh.

The empty unused water bottles filled with sand, iron-ore dust and slag ash have been used in the project. These materials served as an alternative to bricks.
