In a distressing turn of events, the matter of wild elephants' deaths in the Mosabani and Chakulia jungles within the Ghatsila sub-division of East Singhbhum district has caught the attention of the central government. A specially constituted team, organized by the Home Ministry, undertook a comprehensive spot inspection by visiting the affected areas on Sunday.

The primary focus of the investigation was to uncover the circumstances leading to the tragic deaths of the wild elephants. The team diligently worked to identify those responsible for the deaths and engaged in discussions to formulate effective preventive measures to avert similar incidents in the future.

The disconcerting incident unfolded with the electrocution of five wild elephants at a forest stretch in Mosabani on November 21. Two days later, an additional two elephants suffered the same fate in the Chakulia forest range. The occurrence sent shockwaves through the forest department, prompting swift action.

The investigative team meticulously collected evidence from the scenes of the incidents and engaged with the local communities surrounding the affected jungles. This inclusive approach aimed to gain insights from the villagers and integrate their perspectives into the investigation.

Key personnel involved in the probe included Wildlife Crime Control Bureau’s Joint Director HV Girisha, Senior Wildlife Officer N Laxminarayan, Conservator of Forest (Jharkhand) PR Naidu, JBVNL General Manager Santosh Mani Singh, Jamshedpur DFO Mamta Priyadarshi, JBVNL’s Jamshedpur Circle Superintending Engineer Deepak Kumar, and Executive Engineer Rajkishore.

While the investigation provided clarity on the reasons behind the electrocution deaths of five elephants in Mosabani, the situation in Chakulia remains unclear. Wildlife Crime Control Bureau Joint Director Girisha highlighted the need for further investigation, especially as the two elephants were electrocuted in separate places.

"At Chakulia, two elephants were electrocuted in separate places. Hence, we have to find out the circumstances that caused the two pachyderms to get electrocuted in separate places," Girisha emphasized. He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among the forest department, local administration, and electricity departments to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between wildlife and human activities and underscores the urgency for proactive measures to safeguard both ecosystems and endangered species. The central government's commitment to a thorough investigation reflects its dedication to preserving India's rich biodiversity and preventing further loss of its magnificent wildlife.
