In a quick response to a tip off Ranchi police on Wednesday spotted and defused a can bomb weighing 10 kg planted at an under construction building of the Central University of Jharkhand at Cheri Manatu area in the  outskirts of the city, 12 km from here.

The bomb was first spotted by labourers working at a site of an under construction boys hostel of the institute.  They immediately informed the Kanke police station, which swung into action immediately. “It was a 10 kg can bomb. The bomb disposal squad safely defused it,” said Kanke Police station incharge.

On being asked whether there were any suspects for planting the bomb and the intention of planting it at the site the police officer said that it was too early to say anything about the intention of the bomb planter and the identities of the suspects.  Meanwhile, a major tragedy was also evaded in Simdega on Wednesday as suspected CPI (Maoists) planted time bomb at a petrol pump which was later defused by a bomb disposal squad. A heavy land mine weighing over 5 kg was planted at the opening of the fuel tanker used for filling up the Time.

“A 5 kg cane bomb was found at a petrol pump at Kolebira in Simdega which was connected with a timer. We disconnected the timer first and then the bomb was defused by a bomb disposal squad which has come from Ranchi,” said Simdega SP Aseem Vikrant Minz.Police however, without ruling out the involvement of CPI (Maoists) in the incident said the investigation was being carried out to find out the motive behind planting the bomb at the petrol pump. Personal enmity might also be the motive behind planting the bomb, said Minz.
