It’s wedding seasons and sounds like a matrimonial advertisement published in a newspaper! Bhagawan Birsa Zoo officials are out to look for a suitable groom for its Sundari, a tigress. In fact the zoo authority is worried about family of the pair kept here which is not growing due to biological reasons. As the pair is siblings Sundari is unable to conceive, the officials presume and thus the hunt has begun. The zoo authorities are in the process to chalk out an alternative plan which includes bringing a male tiger from Itanagar Zoological Park its tigress. Birsa Zoo Director AK Patra said, “We are coining the idea to bring a male tiger from the Itanagar zoo”.

It is an assumption of zoo authorities that the tiger and tigress living at the Ormanjhi based enclosure are siblings of same parents which may have proved a deterrent in reproduction. Zoo veterinary specialist Dr Ajay Kumar said, “We tried to mate the tiger and tigress twice. It failed as they are offspring of the same parents.” The marginal number of tiger and tigress left at Bhagawan Birsa Zoological Park is not showing any signs new born. Renewed attraction demands new faces with Though, the plan to welcome new Royal Bengal Tiger is yet to be proposed before the Itanagar Zoo as they are thinking about another attempt.

Zoo Director, Patra mentioned, “Recently nothing much has been thought over the issue. It is just at a proposal stage with us.” In the past as well zoo officials had planed to bring pair of some new inmates like Asiatic lions and Royal Bengal Tigers. Describing the need of a male tiger Patra mentioned, “Ones the idea will be coined, the zoo will have new inmates. Bhagawan Birsa Biological Park is one of the beautiful zoos located in beautiful natural surrounding requires some new inmates,” he added. Apart from the tiger, the Zoo authority is also looking for Ostrich’s from the Tamil Nadu Veterinary College and Hippo’s from the Odisha’s Nandan Kanan Zoological Park. These animals would be major attraction of the zoo. “We are also looking forward to bring Giraffes and Zebra from African Zoo, ones the proposal will be approved before the end of this year,” Patra said.If the proposal to bring the male tiger gets approval of high ranked officials of the Itanagar Zoological Park it would be a real ‘good news’ for animal lovers of Jharkhand.
