Bai Banki Canal suffers damage due to  incessant rain

Nityanand Dubey

Three days of heavy rain have caused significant damage across the Garhwa district. A major canal project, the Bai Banki Canal—constructed just last year at a cost of Rs. 165 crore—has collapsed after the first monsoon rain. As a result, many acres of farmland have been destroyed. This canal was built to support nearly 25,000 farmers in areas like Bisunpura, Majhianv, Bardiha, and Kandi. However, the first rainfall has exposed serious flaws in the construction, raising concerns about corruption.

Farmers Blame Corruption for the Collapse

The canal construction began during Raghubar Das’s government and continued under the next administration. Farmers from around 20 panchayats had hoped the canal would bring prosperity. Instead, the poor construction quality caused it to break down with the first rain.

Farmers claim the collapse is due to substandard work and possible collusion between contractors and officials. They now fear that farming may not be possible this season, as their fields are severely damaged.

In response, Garhwa Deputy Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Yadav said a report will be sent to the concerned department to find out how such a large project failed so quickly.

DC and SP Inspect Flood-Prone Areas

With more rain expected, Deputy Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Yadav and Superintendent of Police Aman Kumar visited areas near the Son and Koel rivers to review disaster preparedness. They asked local officials to stay alert and ready to act quickly in case of any emergencies. They also directed that people living near riverbanks be shifted to safer places if needed.

Visit to Bheem Barrage and River Junction

Officials also inspected the Bheem Barrage and the point where the Son and Koel rivers meet. They found that the siren system, which is supposed to warn people downstream before water is released from the barrage, is not working due to a technical issue. This creates the risk of sudden flooding without warning.

The DC has instructed that the siren system be repaired immediately. He assured the public that the administration is fully prepared and urged people not to believe rumors and to follow all safety instructions from officials.
