Adolescence period marks the transitional phase of a child in which he undergoes a wave of emotions. Some overcome it while others succumb. As a result of this, incidents such as crimes and suicide have become prevalent among the teenagers. In curbing these menace, teachers can play pivotal role as a child spends majority of his time in school, said experts at RINPAS on Saturday.

Director of Ranchi Institute of Neuro- Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS) Dr Amool Ranjan Said, “As many as 15-20 per cent of our young generation suffers behavioural problems and approximately one percent children have major mental illness. It is important that teachers should rectify such students and take everyone on board.”

He further added, “Teachers often discard students who have weak academic performance and as a result stress in such children multiplies at faster pace. Under this situation teachers become antagonist for those students which adversely affect their life later on. Teachers should adopt a motivational attitude for all children. If required they should counsel such students.”

Peer groups also plays a vital role in leading a child in  wrong direction. In majority of addiction cases it has been witnessed that friends are the real culprits driving the youth towards bad habit.

Dr Masroor Jahan said, “Majority of child acquire drugs consumption habit due to their friend group. A child starts stealing, lying and often makes excuses in doing any work; if a teacher finds this behaviour in any child they should consult a counsellor. Moreover, teachers should keep an eye on the child’s peer group too.”

A workshop was also organised by the doctors of RINPAS seeking the need to sensitise school teachers about mental health problems among the school going students. Teachers from different schools of the city attended this workshop.
