'Awareness about Umang helpline required in society'

PNS

In order to protect the future of our country from taking any life threatening moves and putting their life in danger Ranchi Institute of  Neuropsychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS) started an adolescent helpline cum counseling center “Umang”, but it is found that a quite a big part of the society is not aware of this.

In order to create awareness  about this helpline service, Department of Social welfare, women and child development of the state organised a workshop on ‘Strategy development on effective functioning of adolescent helpline cum counseling centre Umang’ for schools principals and teachers on Monday. Principal Secretary, Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Jharkhand Mridula Sinha said, “The basic aim of conducting this workshop is to sensitize the schools principals and teachers in identifying the physiological problem of  their students and help the students to overcome it. Moreover, they could also inform their student about this helpline.”

She further added, “There is a need to provide training to the school authority first so as to enable them to help to their students.” Director of RINPAS, Dr Amool Ranjan said, “We have received only 92 calls since the service was launched and the basic reason for low calls that people are not aware of this service. Time demands that the children as well as their parents should be made aware of this service and to motivate them to feel free in discussing the problem and seeking suggestion for their wards. This workshop is a small step in this direction.”

Director of Primary Education Mamta who was also present in the workshop said, “Such workshops should be conducted on regular basis in different schools and parents should also be encouraged to participate in it.”The principals of different schools who attended this workshop welcomed the proposal and have decided to conduct a workshop in their school premises for children and their students.
