The All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) has welcomed the Delhi HC judgement sentencing congress leader Sajjan Kumar to life term in connection with 1984 anti-sikh riot in New Delhi.
President of AISSF East India zone Satnam Singh Gambhir said he has been waiting for this judgment for the past 34 years. Gambhir was all praise for Jagdish Kaur, the witness in the case against the congress leader, saying she has shown tremendous courage by coming forward to depose against Kumar.
He, however, observed that several cases related to the genocide are pending in Jharkhand and other parts of the country which should be addressed as soon as possible.
“We would meet the Jharkhand CM to demand for formation of special investigation team in the lines of the central government,” he stated.
Pointing out that not a single person has been convicted in connection with the anti-sikh riots in Jharkhand he demanded that state government should take steps for speedy disposal of cases. He informed that according to officials figures 79 people were killed in the riot while many others were injured. The police had registered a total of 460 cases in Jharkhand after the riot. “The heinous crime committed against sikh people can never be forgotten. After Delhi and Kanpur the maximum number of death took place in Bokaro steel city in Jharkhand,” he stated.
He added government had formed a commission to look into the carnage on the direction of Jharkhand High Court in 2015. He added that the HC judgment has raised new hopes among the victims of the riots.
