Taking swift action against the violence which took place at Ranchi Women’s College and Adivasi Hostel here during the day-long ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Monday, Adivasi Chatra Sangh president Sanjay Mahli was arrested and sent to jail for leading the mob for violence against police.
More than a dozen police personnel, including City SP Aman Kumar and Kotwali DSP Rajkumar Mehta were injured during a scuffle between hostel students and police force, which had been called to calm down the protesters pelting stones on the vehicles and the policemen at Women’s College and Adivasi Hostels in Ranchi.
‘Bharat Bandh’ was called by the Tribal and Dalit organizations on Monday against the recent Supreme Court ruling to stop the misuse of the provisions of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989,
“FIR has been lodged against more than 200 people at lalpur Police Station, naming both boys and girl students, under which one of the accused persons Sanjay Mahli has been arrested,” said City SP Aman Kumar.
Those who had been picked up from the hostel rooms on Monday have been freed as all of them were not involved in the violence, he added.
Meanwhile, other persons involved in the violence are being identified on the basis of video footages made available by the News Channels, following which action will be taken against them, said the SP.
later in the evening on Tuesday, a candle march was also organized from Jail Chowk to Albert Ekka Chowk against the ‘inhuman’ police action where the girl students were beaten up and teased by entering in their hostel.
“Such an inhuman and barbarous action has been witnessed in Jharkhand for the first time where the girls were manhandled and beaten up by policemen in their hostel and FIR was lodged against the innocent persons. We demand that the FIR lodged in this regard is withdrawn and action against the officials responsible for the incident,” said JVM Tribal leader Bandhu Tirkey.
“On April 5, a protest march has also been organized by the Tribals, Dalits and some of the Opposition parties from Morhabdi Ground to Raj Bhawan following which a memorandum will also be handed over to Governor Droupadi Murmu requesting her to intervene, said Tirkey. A demand will also be made to the Governor to get the incident investigated by a sitting or retired judge, he added.
