Adhia: GST roll out from July 1

Putting an end to the speculation over delaying rollout of Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Centre has instead assured the traders of giving another chance to get themselves enrolled in the new tax regime.

Union Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, who was here on Friday, said that the business community can resume their registration from June 25. “All those who could not enroll into the GST due to one reason or the other can do that again from June 25. All those traders, who were left out, would be given another chance. Fabric traders can also start their registration from June 25,” said Adhia after meeting Chief Minister Raghubar Das in the run up to the formal GST launch.

The Centre has gone ahead setting a deadline on July 1 to switch over to the new taxation system which is webbed around the idea of ‘one nation-one tax’. States like West Bengal are opposing the July launch and have demanded for extending the deadline. Since the State’s Assembly, unlike host of other provinces, is yet to pass the State-GST Bill, speculations are rife that the date may be extended further. Nevertheless Adhia expressed confidence that the system would come into force from July 1 itself.

“Jharkhand has done good preparatory exercise to adopt the GST here. There are many benefits for the traders and as well as consumers under the GST  regime. Clothes are going to be cheaper after the GST is implemented. Traders can gain through input credit and common man would not be burdened. Benefits of GST are going to be reflected in long term which would ensure smoothness along with transparency in the system,” added the Revenue Secretary who also held a meeting with concerned Departments and their heads.

The Chief Minister underlined the steps taken by the Government in rolling out the new taxation system in the State. “Jharkhand had started very early in this direction. Even our Ministers and MlAs have been provided training for this. We are aware that the GST would pose some difficulties in the beginning but later on it would prove beneficial in the interest of businessmen and common citizens,” said the CM after meeting the Union Revenue Secretary. He also added that a 24X7 call centre would be set up to assist the traders of the State.
