At least five new cases of coronavirus surfaced in Jharkhand on Thursday – all from Palamu, health officials said. The findings take the total count of coronavirus cases in State to 132, they added.

"Five suspects tested positive for Covid-19 today. All of them are from Palamu district," said Health Secretary Nitin Madan Kulkarni. "The patients are mostly youngsters," he added.

This is the second instance when more than one suspect has tested positive in Palamu on a day. Last month, three suspects tested positive for Covid-19 in a day. Now, the total count of Covid-19cases in Palamu has shot up to eight, health officials said.

All the five suspects who tested positive on Thursday are in the age bracket of 20 to 31 years – a trend that indicates how young people were as prone to get infected by the virus as older ones, officials from the National Health Mission (NHM) said. Out of the five new patients, four are men and remaining one is a 30-year-old woman, sources said.

According to the daily Covid-19 bulletin released by NHM on Thursday evening, at least 46 Coronavirus patients here have recovered and there are 83 active cases in State. Three Covid-19 patients have died so far, and one of them tested negative before breathing her last, officials said.

A press communique from the Ranchi district administration said that at least nine Covid-19 patients in Ranchi recovered on Thursday. Ranchi, which is the worst-affected district in Jharkhand, has reported more than 70 per cent of the Covid-19 cases in State, officials said.

Out of the 132 cases here, 93 are from Ranchi and 10 from Bokaro. The remaining affected districts have cases in single digit.

At least 30 patients in Ranchi have recovered, while six have recovered in Bokaro. Three in Hazaribag, two in Dhanbad and one in Simdega have won their battle against coronavirus so far, the bulletin released by NHM said.

As many as 60 of the 132 cases in Jharkhand are in the age bracket of 11 to 30 years and 42 are in the age bracket of 31 to 50 years, the NHM report said. At least nine children, below the age of 10 years, have been infected by the virus in Jharkhand so far, the report said.
