A wild bear mauled three villagers, including two brothers, to death and injured three others on Friday night at Barkol village in Garhwa district of Jharkhand on Friday night.

The injured persons, including a woman, are being treated at Sadar Hospital, Garhwa and are said to be out of danger.

The incident happened around 8 pm on Friday when 38-year-old Anit Gidh came out of the house to Barkol Khurd village for grooving paddy.

The village is situated on the foothills of Sonvarsha Hills surrounded by forest. He was at a distance of 200 meters from the house when a wild bear attacked him.

In an attempt to escape from the attack, he shouted for help.  Hearing his voice, his elder brother Sunit Gidh, 42, ran towards him.

On reaching there, the bear attacked him too.  Hearing the cries of both the brothers, 40-year-old Raju Minj also rushed to help.  On reaching there, the bear attacked him too.

All three people seriously injured in the bear attack died on the spot.

Sometime later, Kamlesh Gidh was returning home with his wife Manita Lakra and two children.

Manita said, “After hearing the sound of moaning in the forest, when my husband wanted to look at the creature with a flashlight, the bear attacked her too. He asked her to run away with both the children from there. Also 25-year-old Chhote Gidh   and 24-year-old Maryam Gidh reached there after hearing Kamlesh’s cries, the bear attacked them too.”

After that there was chaos in the village.  The villagers somehow took all the injured to Sadar Hospital for treatment late in the night.

Civil Surgeon Dr Kamlesh Kumar said, “Chhote Gidh has suffered a serious injury on his left eye due to a wild bear attack.  Due to this he was referred to Ranchi, but no one was going to accompany him.  That’s why he is being treated here.”

The injured persons being treated here are out of danger,” Kumar added.
